09 - Willing to understand Invisalign

It took me many years to embrace clear aligners as a standard tool for adult treatment (and not only). I waited until the introduction of the Clincheck Pro / 3D controls to be my first Invisalign patient has I had to recover from minor relapse after an unrepaired broken lower retention wire.I felt the need of accurate control of the setup as I found the verbal process of refinement unsatisfactory and definitely too long.

It took me many years to embrace clear aligners as a standard tool for adult treatment (and not only). I waited until the introduction of the Clincheck Pro / 3D controls to be my first Invisalign patient has I had to recover from minor relapse after an unrepaired broken lower retention wire.I felt the need of accurate control of the setup as I found the verbal process of refinement unsatisfactory and definitely too long.In the last four years I have been treating a big enough bunch of patients to develop a personal opinion on the appliance, and I was recently looking for solutions to those that I perceived as limits of the therapy - or limits of my education? Surfing on Facebook I came through the profile of a very active colleague, Dr Diego Peydro Herrero, who is regularly posting pictures of his patients treated with invisalign and finished like they were all board quality cases - EBO/ABO according from the part of the world from where you read =)It’s not one perfect case, it’s many great cases in a row meaning that there’s something consistent behind those results. By googling his name, I figured out that together with his colleague Dr Ivan Malagon, he is running an nonofficial Invisalign academy called Master COIP (Clear Ortho International Program).

I hesitated quite a bit before to subscribe to this course, just before it’s probably the most expensive three-day course that I have ever did. By not having feedbacks of 1st degree friends who recently attended their lectures I had to launch myself (and with me a couple of Italian friends living in Switzerland).Diego and Ivan made it definitely worthy! They run a 200km/h life running around the world among lectures and their clinics and you can breathe this energy during their lectures. Their flamboyant personality makes them two great entertainers, other than excellent clinicians. In the three-Madrid days they generously share their Invisalign expertise by entering into minor details of protocol personalization, attachment selection, sequencing of movements. In fact they systematically change the way in which the Clincheck is conceived by the mother ship. Before to listen to their lectures I had the feeling that it was almost useless to adjust the Clincheck of the first series of aligner as it was going to fail in any case. After learning how to deeply analyze and segment movements, my setup corrections skills that I perceived as average/good, immediately appeared as poor. Their results at the end of the first set of aligners are much better than what I used to see.Not to say about the difficulty of cases. They presented a lot of cases and none of them was the standard, easy to treat invisalign patient (you’re not going there to learn how to treat that patient after all). It was the ultimate proof that you literally can consider Invisalign a treatment tool as effective as any other appliance. For some cases it’s probably even more appropriate than braces. They both presented impressive arch widening in adults, without any apparent periodontal issue. In particular this case made me almost asleep for the next night and I had to be shaken-up by Ivan asking me if it was all ok with me, as I couldn’t believe to my eyes =)https://www.facebook.com/dr.ivanmalagon/posts/10212335985269202:0There’s up-to-day a gap between clinical results that some colleagues are showing in terms of expansion and the literature. What as been stated and thought us as impossible, is apparently possible and not that harmful to bones and gingiva. The classic concept of bone-growth is
